The Pontiac GTO

The Pontiac GTO released by General Motors has had several versions to it since 1964. In its later version released by Holden it held extraordinary presence in its performance and favor in people’s hearts from 2004-06. The predecessors of this extraordinary car have been the Pontiac Tempest and the Pontiac Grand Prix Coupe. This muscle car with the FR layout has been embraced internationally for its amazing performance and overall great advantages and power.

The Pontiac GTO was built by Pontiac Division of GM in the US. From 1964 to 1974, the car experienced exuding call from people across the world. The subsidiary Holden in Australia later took its releasing responsibilities from 2004. The Pontiac GTO has closely related to Pontiac Tempest/LeMans. The 1974 model year was even made on the Pontiac Ventura. The 21st century GTO has been a left-hand driven Holden Monaro with a variation in its coupe that has been the Holden Commodore. The original ideal of Pontiac came from the engineers Russell Gee, Bill Collins and John De Lorean. In the 1963 when GM was looking forward to bring an evolved version of the muscle car with new marketing approaches, these strategies and components of the Pontiac came to be in the developing front. The racing and performance was always a heavy call to the development of the Pontiac. Pontiac’s advertising campaign with young and visionary marketing approaches to bring in emphasize on street performance and heavy call through the different stages of the car’s development.

GM’s ban on factory sponsored racing was another take on the turning point of the development of the Pontiac GTO. Pontiac Chief Marketing expert of that time, Jim Wangers, have stated in his autobiography, “Glory Days” that the contact adveritising and the public relations along with the chief engineering responsibilities envisioned by DeLorean, Collins and Gee were effective in bringing the Pontiac to reality. The GTO creation thus came with the visions of the young engineers along with the upcoming redesigning and restructuring of the model. The following design of the Tempest was also on order along with the reversion to conventional front engine, front transmission and new configurations to rear wheel drive. These fresh settings led to the development of the Super Tempest later. The full sized Pontiac Catalina and Bonneville also came in place along side the standard Tempest V8. The new promotions of the big time engineering and special high performance focus created these new waves of changes in muscle cars from GM.

The Tempest along with the Pontiac GTO were all focused at marketing to the speed loving young generation and got closely followed by the release of the Ford Mustang. The name of Pontiac GTO was suggested by DeLorean, as inspired from the Ferrari 250 GTO which was also a successful race car. The GTO actually represents Gran Turismo Omologato which is Italian for homologated racing in Grand tourer states. There were several oppositions faced in the GTO naming but then GM stuck to it and the conceived idea.
